Yaroomba Classic 2021 in Memory of Tony “Beaver” Van Haren
It’s that time of the year again, the 33rd edition of the Coolum Boardriders annual event TheYaroomba Classic, to be held on the Long Weekend of the 02nd, 3rd and 04th of October. Since its beginning in 1987 the Yaroomba Classic which developed from the Rob Marshall memorial has only ever missed 1 Year, 2020 of course.
The much‐Loved annual local surfing event is a hotly contested competition, a major social gathering of the surfing clan but mostly a chance to have a laugh and celebrate the fantastic surfing lifestyle we have on the coast and the greatly missed personalities that have left us too soon.” This year’s event is a special tribute to one of the Former Coolum Boardrider Club Champions Tony “Beaver” Van Haren.
The event is open to past Club Members and Surfers living between Castaways Beach and the Maroochy River, catering for ages ranging from the 12 and under Grom’s to the 60 and Over Old Kahuna’s. Although the Event focuses on having fun, all divisions are hotly contested including the Open Women and Cadet Girls divisions.
Last Classics Open Winners Kirra Green and Ellia Smith will be back and both very excited to defend their Champion Titles. This year as every year will be another fantastic event to witness again.
The Organising Committee, Club and Community is very grateful for the generous support of the wonderful local sponsors who make this event the success it is. There will be heaps of prizes, Trophies and Giveaways thanks to those wonderful sponsors whom again we warmly thank for their generous donations.

About Coolum Boardriders
In the early 1980’s, a group of young Coolum surfers began holding surfing contests at Coolum Beach to provide an opportunity for other local surfers to compete in a friendly and social atmosphere. Today the club in its 38th year has now grown to be one of the most respected boardriding clubs in Australia running at Least 12 Local Events throughout the Year and Competing in Many away from home competitions.
Since its incorporation in 1988, the club has been affiliated under “Surfing Australia”, and “Surfing Queensland” the sport’s governing bodies for competition, judging and coaching.
From the Under 12 Micro Grommets all the way up to the Over 50 Grand Masters there is a wide range of age divisions catered for in club competition.
A strong family element exists and it is quite common to see Dad or Mum out there surfing with their kids as club days are all about fun and surfing.
Competitively the club has produced Four World Junior Champions, Jye Gofton (1991), Paul Ward (1992), Julian Wilson (2006), and most recently Isabella Nichols (2015).
This year alone 2 of the best in the world have come out of Coolum, Current Coolum Boardriders Members Julian Wilson and Isabella Nichols on the CT.
We also have one of our young Girls Ellia Smith gunning for a spot on the QS with excellent results in the World and Australian Junior Titles Gaining her a spot at the Trials for a Wild card Entry into the WCT Corona Open Gold Coast.
Surfers compete regularly at Club Level, Regional, State, National and World titles.
The club also competes regularly in National Boardriding Teams events including the Australian Boardriders Battle, the Kirra Teams challenge (2016/2017 junior Girls Champions) and the infamous (2001 Champions) Straddie Assault Challenge.
In 2009 the club was awarded the Simon Anderson Premier Boardriding club at the Australian Hall of Fame
Coolum Boardriders is also very unique in that it is one of the very few Boardriding Clubs in Australia to have their own clubhouse right on the Beach.
Being so close to the beach provides excellent access and facilities for running surfing
Competitions and it is often used as a base for major national and state surfing contests held on the Sunshine Coast.
