LISTING DETAILS

Clayden pottery studio is centrally situated in Tradewinds Avenue, just  a couple blocks from the Coolum Library - on a quiet, rainforest block next to the creek. Clayden potters are a friendly creative group who welcome adult visitors and new members. The purpose-built studio and club have been in action for 32 years. No previous experience with clay is necessary if you would like to spend a morning with us.
There are several qualified  people who are happy to help you get started. We meet Monday and Saturday mornings for four hours. Both men and women attend these sessions.
Beautiful sculpture, Raku ware, hand-built pots and vessels  are completed weekly. The work is unique and not expensive. We have two potter's wheels and two large digitally-operated electric kilns. We have a large range of stunning glazes suitable for stoneware or earthenware pots.
Our whole group project this year is a large three dimensional mural featuring Mt Coolum and its surrounds with many native animals, birds and plants.

Clayden potters have a supply of clay on hand and no special tools are needed to start hand-building. This technique involves rolling the clay into slabs or coils then carefully blending these together to make sculptures or vessels. We have lots of plaster slump moulds available - clay slabs are lain in these to make instant bowls. Mastering the pottery wheel is a very long a process, but we have potters who can show you how. Our collection of books can inspire ceramicists. We have many on technique, materials and design. Clayden mixes many of its own glazes from scratch to produce unique and gorgeous effects. Our comprehensive selection of glaze books help make this possible. The garden at the Clayden studio is the ideal spot to fire our Raku kiln. This is an exciting Japanese method of firing that produces amazing decorative effects on vases and sculpture. Red hot ceramics are taken from the kiln using tongs. Goggles, masks and many safety precautions are a must. The glaze is then deprived of oxygen by smothering it with paper or leaves in a sealed bin, and by spraying it with water to set the colours that emerge. The Clayden Potters Association has functioned for thirty- two years. I bet you didn't even know it existed. I am sure you have driven along Tradewinds Avenue and never noticed the studio among the trees. This is your chance to discover your creative side and make many talented friends.
