Coolum Caravan Club Inc.
The Coolum Caravan Inc. had its beginning early 2002 when John & Val Allinson decided it was too far to travel to their old caravan club at Caboolture.
They decided that maybe there was a need for a caravan club in the Coolum area so they put an advertisement in the local paper asking for interested caravanners to meet at their home on 23/01/2002. The response was overwhelming with 27 people turning up. After much discussion on the pro’s and con’s of being a caravan club member it was decided to go ahead and form the club, with 20 of those attending joining to become foundation members giving the newly formed club 10 caravans.
The foundation committee was formed with John Allinson as President and Linda Hutchinson as Vice President. The committee also included Graham Knight as Secretary/ Treasurer, Jan Wering as Tour/ Social Director and Ron d’Arx as Editor. This committee was given the task of putting together a constitution, club rules, affiliation with the Caravan Clubs of Queensland, and the establishment of a bank Account.
The next meeting was scheduled for 17thFebruary at the Lion’s Park, Coolum, when progress re the above would be tabled. A venue for our monthly meetings was discussed and the Anglican Church Hall was chosen with meetings to be held on the first Thursday of each month. It was decided at a very early meeting that we as a caravan club should support the Royal Flying Doctor Service by making an annual donation, a practice that has been in place ever since. It was decided our first rally would be to Tinnabar and both it and future rallies would be of one week duration, starting on the third Thursday of each month. Rallies would not be held during the months of December & January. The venue for each rally would be kept to about four hours drive from Coolum with one extended rally per year. The extended rally is becoming very popular with this years rally having 14 vans, going to Canberra in September for the Floriade.
Two of our foundation members Bill Jensen, a country balladeer & his wife Fay, became a great asset for the club. Many a time while on a rally with Bill & Fay entertaining club members, we would have groups from the area where we were staying come to enjoy the entertainment. Bill never let the opportunity pass to raise that little extra cash by asking for a small donation. The money raised was added to the clubs donation and forwarded annually to the Royal Flying Doctors Service.
Bill & Fay have moved on and are now only social members. We have also been lucky enough to have Jim & Jan Christian join our club and carry on the tradition of giving us great entertainment on our rallies.
From the small beginning, the Club now enjoys an active membership; friendships have formed between people who had never met before that 2002 meeting; and our monthly meetings and rallies are generally well attended.
